Cristian Mungiu’s films will have several screenings in Brussels, from the 1st till the 30th of October, during a retrospective initiated by the famous film-makers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. The event is organised by Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique and by Lumière Films distributor, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute.
During this retrospective, which will take place in the Flagey building, the Belgian public will have the opportunity to watch the feature films Occident (2005), 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days, awarded with Golden Palm at Cannes in 2007, Tales from the Golden Age (2009) and the short films The hand of Paulișta (1998), Zapping (2001) and Turkey Girl (2005).
On this occasion, Beyond the Hills, the most recent production written and directed by Cristian Mungiu, inspired by the non-fiction novels of Tatiana Niculescu Bran, will have a special screening on the16th of October. The film won the best screenplay award and the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival this year, prize which was shared by both leading actresses, and it is the Romanian candidate for next year`s Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne – the co-producers of the film, will join the event together with Cristian Mungiu and actresses Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur. On the 15th of October, Beyond the Hills will also be screened at the Ghent Film Festival.
Cristian Mungiu retrospective takes place one month before the official premiere of Beyond the Hills in Benelux. The film will have its release in the Belgium and Luxembourg theatres on the 21st of November and one day later in the Netherlands, and it is distributed by Lumière Films.
Having Les Films du Fleuve as co-producers, Beyond the Hills is the first Romanian film production to be thus supported by the famous – Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne – two of the most influential filmmakers of our time, and two of the few film directors which were twice awarded at the Cannes Film Festival with the supreme distinction of Palme d’Or: in 1999 for Rosetta and in 2005 for L’Enfant. In 2011 they received Le Grand Prix in Cannes for Le gamin au velo.
Beyond the Hills already has sales agents in over 30 countries including France, United Kingdom and the United States.
In Romania, the film will have it’s avant-premiere in Vaslui and Câmpina, starting with the 21st of September while in Bucharest, the film will be screened for the first time during Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest festival, on the25th of October.
